Since 1815, music at the Basilica has glorified God and uplifted spirits. Some of the finest musicians of the last two centuries have passed through its doors. The cornerstone of our vibrant music program is the magnificent 1868 Henry Erben pipe organ, which underpins the hearty singing of our congregation and choirs in hundreds of liturgies every year.
UPCOMING EVENTS AND MORE
The Schola provides choral music at both the 10:30 AM and 7:00 PM Masses, spanning the repertoire of chant and polyphony to newly-composed music.
Stay up-to-date on music events with the Basilica Schola on our Friends of the Erben Organ Facebook page. We post our weekly music list there, information on featured composers, as well as upcoming concerts.
For more information on our recordings, please visit the Gotham Chant Web site.
BASILICA SCHOLA
The Basilica Schola is a largely volunteer ensemble that sings at Sunday Masses, Feasts, and special events throughout the year. We welcome new members and schedule informal auditions on an ongoing basis. It is a great way to enhance your spiritual life, meet fellow parishioners, and deepen your understanding of the tradition.
For all music inquiries, questions about our historic organs, and events (including upcoming weddings), please contact Jared Lamenzo, the Director of Music and Organist.
MUSIC EDUCATION
Basilica Voices: The Basilica hosts an after-school music and religious education program called Basilica Voices. For more information and a schedule, click here. They join the Basilica Schola at Masses throughout the liturgical year.
Pedals, Pipes, and Peals: In 2017, the Friends of the Erben Organ held its inaugural summer musical experience for kids in 2nd-7th grades. Students learned all aspects of pipe organs, as well as handbells and violin. At the end of the camp, learners built their own instrument using the Orgelkids curriculum.
