The
Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral 200th Anniversary
Campaign
and the important connection of the
Old Cathedral with the
history of New York City and the nation, and particularly with the
Irish. The Old
Cathedral is the original St. Patrick's Cathedral and "father" to
the "new" Cathedral in midtown (the same Board of Trustees that
governs the Cathedral in midtown governs the Old Cathedral).
His Excellency Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan announced from the altar of
the "new" Cathedral during the annual S. Patrick's Day Mass celebrated
there on March 17, 2010, that the Holy See had awarded Basilica status
to the Old Cathedral, effective (fittingly) on March 17, 2010,
establishing the Old Cathedral as the first and (so far) only Basilica
in the Archdiocese of New York. Plans are being developed to
celebrate
a Basilica inaugural at the Old Cathedral in the Fall of 2010.
